Alas, what he popped was not a zit, but a boil, festering under his skin where the spot was already infected by bacteria. In Zhejiang, China, a 50-year-old man simply extracted what he assumed was a pimple near the upper part of his mouth. According to him, the spot grew in size and caused him pain. So he took the matter into his own hands by popping the zit and squeezing out the pus.

He thought it was over, until his face swelled.

The Chinese man sought medical attention, after having a high fever and difficulty in breathing. Moreover, his blood sugar levels suddenly spiked. At the Zhejiang Provincial First Hospital, his attending physician noted that the corner of his upper lip turned black. This indicates dead tissue, or necrosis caused by infection or toxins.

The patient also developed sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body responds to infection by shutting down organs and tissues. Antibiotics and intravenous fluids are administered to counter sepsis, and prevent multiple organ failure.

The doctors took off about 8 centimeters of dead tissue on his upper lip to remedy his unfortunate condition. They also extracted 100ml of pus from the infected spot, proceeding to discharge 50 to 100ml of pus over the succeeding days.

The good news is that he was released from the hospital. But the bad news is that he has to undergo reconstructive surgery for his lip someday.
