If you were to name one controversial person to ever grace our TV screens, it would definitely be the comedian, Vice Ganda. While some of his statements are often funny in their raw honesty and brutal truth, there are also times that his jokes are offensive and brash, bordering on mean and bullying.

As one of the “It’s Showtime” hosts, Vice has made quite a few enemies when he drops seemingly innocent one-liners, but laced with malice. Remember how veteran journalist Tony Calvento tried to shut down the show after Vice indirectly insulted him? Or how he made fun of another TV network’s tagline, and how said station wasn’t able to keep its talents from jumping ship?

Well, well, well, the comedian is in the hot seat again after another comment. But this time, it’s about breastfeeding in public. During an episode of “It’s Showtime” wherein he has a short “Qiqil ako” segment, the comedian host ranted about mothers who nurse their children without covering their breasts.

It jumpstarted the age-old question: how should the mothers breastfeed their children? By covering their faces and breasts while their babies suckle? Is it shameful or disgusting to see a baby latched onto its mother’s breast?

Of course, his statement drew flak from netizens for its callousness and apparent shaming of breastfeeding mothers. “Inulan ng batikos” is a more apt description of reactions from the viewers. In the Philippines, one of the country’s advocacies is breastfeeding babies as much as possible.

Most of the netizens are frustrated with the comedian’s apparent ignorance about nursing a child since he’s a male. That, or his blatant mansplaining about breastfeeding. Some called his statement prejudiced and sexist, as the shame from nursing in public is deeply rooted in society sexualizing the female breasts.

While a few will agree with Vice’s joke, more viewers called for understanding about the increasing importance of accepting breastfeeding in public as the new normal.
